The Tools Of My Trade

by Chris T.

The creak of this rusty old toolbox tells a tale,

Of life not quite lived, still darkened by the veil.

For I once knew with precision each implement, each tool.

But now they are dusty, and I’m so far out of school.

I see them in the corner of the garage of my soul,

And someday I wish that I would reach my goal,

To be an instrument of God’s holy grace.

But that old toolbox just sits there staring me in the face.

Sometime next week I plan to achieve,

To break out each instrument that I did receive.

Making them all sharp as a knife,

Will make a man steady in the rough course of life

Oh, I am so busy and lacking in time,

And this may well be my most dangerous crime,

That I have allowed to be covered in rust,

The tools of my trade which now turn to dust.

I like the photo. I would need a large tool box for my favorite writers and dictionary. I like the way you described the tool box. Gave it purpose and reason. Thank you for the excellent poetry.
