Please Take My Hand

Please Take My Hand

A Poem by James Kay

This strap that holds my notebook together,

Oh, if it were to break.

You'd see all that is inside of me,

Everybody that I hate.

I covered it in hearts,

Because I love everyone.

I pinned this bracelet here,

Because that's all that's left of Mum.

On every page there is a memory,

Or a face I'd like to kill.

The suicide notes are endless.

The suicide notes are endless, but I'm not dead yet.

But just look at what this place has done to me:

I was drowning letters in the bath last night.

Just look at what it's done to us:

We drink until we forget we're alive.

But I'm throwing this notebook down the mausoleum steps,

So please take my hand.

We're running away into that sunset.

And we're never coming back.

Oh my god, the imagery.
As a critic, I have to admit this is very, VERY prose-y, but as me, f**k.
Man, I loved these lines:
"Or a face I'd like to kill."
"The suicide notes are endless, but I'm not dead yet."
"I was drowning letters in the bath last night."
"We're running away into that sunset."
But most especially the drowning letters line.
Would you mind if I used that line as my next poetry quote?

fantastic. constant and utter brilliance. the fact that the entire poem's subject, is so readily thrown to the wind, at the end, leaves it to be so magically undefined.

Wonderfully written and full to the brim with imagery,

This poem is very meaningful. It invokes a lot of meaning and - heck, I suck a criticism. It's brilliant. The metaphors really drew me in.
