Squandered

Squandered

A Poem by Chops

We were so young
When we paired
Attracted
By our radical youth
Thinking ourselves
Rebellious and bold
With the maturity
Of teenage grownups
Attached
By our sameness

These many years later
Paths long divergent
That misperceived sameness
Laid bare long ago
But banded 'til now
By conventions of union
We squandered our years
Under the patina of stability
And obligation

Finally emboldened
By the deepening shadow of aging
Separate and freed of our bind
At long last
But late, oh too late
For that nascent scent
Of cinnamon and heaven
Of new arms now withdrawn

Your poem resonated with me. I was reminded of a past love in my youth. A girl that I had a crush on when I was a kid, and who felt the same but we never acted upon our feelings. Many years later we would see each other again and those feelings were still there but only in resonance. Age softens the heart and also tempers it with reality. We can't always go back to the way we were. A thoughtful poem. Thank you for sharing.
