A Virtual Goodnight Hug

We are standing in your front hall. It is almost dark, with only the kitchen fixture casting indirect light into our space.

It’s time for me to go and we move towards each other for a goodnight hug. Your arms reach around my back and you rest your left cheek on my chest. My arms encircle you.

We press together tighter to snuggle, my head nestled next to yours. I feel your breath, warm on my neck, and I inhale deeply, taking in your scent.

After some moments, I shift, take your head in my hands and tilt it down to place a soft kiss on your forehead, which is warm and smooth. You adjust to fit our bodies tighter and snuggle in again.

Later, I lift your head and bend to kiss your neck, just below your left jaw. You arch your neck up to accept. I slowly trace your neck down towards your shoulder and then back up to behind your ear. You sigh audibly, your knees soften slightly and you lean harder into me.

After another moment, you push back and gaze at me with soft, moist, doe eyes. I take it as a look of deep affection, but there is a touch of a question mark in them, too.

You blink and lean in, kissing my lips and then tugging slightly on my upper lip as you pull your lips away. We move back to a tight embrace, shifting so that every possible inch of our bodies is making contact. You seem to be pulling me extra hard toward you, resisting the inevitable upcoming separation.

My right hand runs through your hair, then my fingers trace your forehead, temple and cheek, and down across your lips. You are tempted to take my fingers into your mouth and slowly pull them out through your lips, but you resist, only giving them a slight kiss as they trace down to your chin and then to the back of your neck.

My hand continues down and takes yours, fingers intertwined, and then our joined hands come back up towards our faces. We spontaneously both gaze at these hands, enjoying the sight of being intertwined. And we rock slightly; it is almost as if we are having a dance. We are just plain content in that moment.

I bend again to kiss your neck and press my mouth a little harder into the softness beneath your jaw. You gasp, shiver, and pull away sharply, letting me know that this is too close to unbounded pleasure for a parting moment. I don't quite understand why you do not want to give in to that ecstasy, but find it intensely gratifying that I can have that effect on you, and accept your instruction not to take you there. Instead, we return to a full embrace, both arms thrown around the other and slowly caressing each other's backs. My hands slide down to your low back and waist, and I pull you up and to me. Your sweater has ridden up a little, and I can just feel some of the skin on your back above your jeans. I slide my hand to take in that tactile contact, my fingers just slightly below the top of your waistband towards forbidden territory, memorizing it as my private experience, not knowing if you are even aware of the touch, but certain that I'm going to hold onto that feeling of softness all the way home.

As if it were possible, we pull still tighter together, knowing that it’s only a goodnight hug, not the start of something longer, and that one of us has to end it. But neither of us makes a move.

After another few more moments, I exhale loudly in resignation, reach up and plant a final kiss on your forehead, then hold your head hard to my chest briefly as you squeeze my shoulders.

Finally, I release my grip and step towards the door, then turn and murmur, is it two or three syllables, you cannot quite make out my words." Was it "Goodnight", "I'll see you", or something else? I turn back to the door and your eyes close, not wanting a fleeting glimpse, then you hear the soft thud of the door shutting and a moment later the click of the gate latch.

Goodnight…
