Rusty’s New Year’s Celebration

 Written by T. L. O’Neal

New Year’s eve was coming fast,

there wasn’t much time to prepare.

So many things that needed doing,

he better get ready and fix his hair.

He decided to go to Times Square,

to celebrate with all the folk.

It was starting to get cold outside,

so he put on his winter cloak.

Then Rusty the cat wondered,

what would he do for the New Year.

When the ball dropped he looked,

and out of his eye came a tear.

He toasted the New Year,

as he sang “Auld Lang Syne.”

Then he lifted up his glass,

and drank his catnip wine.

To the mice that he would miss,

he shouldn’t have eaten them all.

Now all he has to play with is,

his old red fuzzy ball.

Rusty the cat was looking forward,

to New Year’s Day he thought.

With all the good things to eat,

that his mama and daddy bought.

With pork roast, black-eyed peas,

greens and fried cornbread too.

This made him so excited,

that he let out a happy mew.

He wants to watch some football,

and the Rose Parade is the best.

Then it’s time for a big catnap,

to get some sleep and rest.

Then when the day is all over,

he’ll think back on it and smile.

Only another year he thought,

that’s not even a country mile.

Then when the day is all over
He'll think back on it and smile
Only another year he thought
That's not even a country mile ... Priceless!

... "And drank his catnip wine," that's about the most poetic and creative thing I've read lately. I love it because it made me smile. One thing is for sure, our pets mean the world to us and then some. If I ever get to go to Times Square, I wanna go with Rusty. lol

Rusty is one cool Cat. you did a great job with this. :+)

This is a very cute, entertaining, and creative. It's well written, it flows quite good, and not only is this a good poem about Rusty, it's also an enjoyable New Years poem.

Great work Terry, this could be the first of many adventures of Rusty judging by the reaction in the reviews. Certainly I think you have hit on a new creation that will have us scratching at your door for more. Loved the artwork and think all in all you have done a brilliant piece of work here.

Many thanks for saying that I made the suggestion but really it was you who gave me the idea to give back to you!!!

A funny and light-hearted look at life through the eyes of a cat on New Year's Eve. Perfect foil to the seriousness of Christmas and the drama that surrounds it. Thank you for sharing.

Ahhhh, Gary, the WC muse. This was precious... I just love the thought of a kitty donning a party hat, bearing the crowds and bringing in the NY with the ball dropping at Times Square. Also very cute that he had a bit of a conscience...feeling bad about eating the mice... although it was only cuz he couldn't eat them again!! lol How human of him!!
Excellent, thanks for passing on!!
Happy New Year to the whole clan.

Rusty is one lucky cat. You can really feel the love for him/her in your lines. This line cracked me up..
To the mice that he would miss
He shouldn't have eaten them all
Now all he has to play with is
His old red fuzzy ball
I'm a dog man, but I read a piece like this, and I wonder if I'm missing something. Cool light hearted write. Rain..

I loved the poem! I'm glad you sent it to me. I enjoyed reading about Rusty's adventures on New Years in New York! Sounds like he will have a blast! I'll be thinking of that when I'm sitting home watching New years celebrations on TV with my kids...I might just read them this poem :) Thanks Again!
