Rusty’s New Year’s Celebration

New Year’s eve was coming fast,

there wasn’t much time to prepare.

So many things that needed doing,

he better get ready and fix his hair.

 

He decided to go to Times Square,

to celebrate with all the folk.

It was starting to get cold outside,

so he put on his winter cloak.

 

Then Rusty the cat wondered,

what would he do for the New Year.

When the ball dropped he looked,

and out of his eye came a tear.

 

He toasted the New Year,

as he sang “Auld Lang Syne.”

Then he lifted up his glass,

and drank his catnip wine.

 

To the mice that he would miss,

he shouldn’t have eaten them all.

Now all he has to play with is,

his old red fuzzy ball.

 

Rusty the cat was looking forward,

to New Year’s Day he thought.

With all the good things to eat,

that his mama and daddy bought.

 

With pork roast, black-eyed peas,

greens and fried cornbread too.

This made him so excited,

that he let out a happy mew.

 

He wants to watch some football,

and the Rose Parade is the best.

Then it’s time for a big catnap,

to get some sleep and rest.

 

Then when the day is all over,

he’ll think back on it and smile.

Only another year he thought,

that’s not even a country mile.

... "And drank his catnip wine," that's about the most poetic and creative thing I've read lately. I love it because it made me smile. One thing is for sure, our pets mean the world to us and then some. If I ever get to go to Times Square, I wanna go with Rusty. lol

I think I saw Rusty when the ball dropped, he was standing to the left a little bit. It looked like he was drinking that "catnip wine." What an amusing and delicious poem about the New Year's cat, Rusty!

LoL . . . I really enjoyed the lighthearted poem. You make Rusty sound like a country version of Garfield the Cat - Only you give him more of a humanistic point of being. Great work. It was fun to read. You are truly talented.

Well, everyone knows I'm partial to cats (having six of them), so of course I'm a sucker for a cat story. Rusty is too cute with his party blower and his mouse-filled catnip wine. What more could a cat want than a loving mommy & daddy and catnip wine? What a lucky feline.

Good job with the rhyme, and I'm always willing to ring in the new year with a new cat (last year I did it with two--my husband is really happy that this year's New Year's cat is not going to live with us--NO ROOM AT THE INN!!! he keeps randomly shouting when he goes outside, just so all the neighborhood strays get the drift. LOL)

TL, this is too cute. Rusty is quite the guy. I have two orange tabbys here... Daddy, Dillon and daughter-DJ. We had to give her sister, Mittens away. So, do you and Judi eat "Hoppin' Johns" at New Years?? One of the many things I remember about living in the south...Happy New Year to you, two! (((Hugs))) to you both!

Love the comparison of a year to a country mile. I think you're right, there seem to be similarities between them, since a year and a country mile are both so full of this and that. They seem similar for a bit.
Then by the first day of a new year, the year gone seems much shorter than a country mile! Thanks, T.L. and Rusty. Have a great '08!
