Nightmare

Nightmare

A Poem by Chloe Marie

Running through the dark,

stopping at a cliff,

waves crashing against the side.

I turn and even though there's nothing,

I jump.

The water is cold against my skin,

my air rushing out of my lunges,

I look above to the surface and kick with all my might,

when I regain my breath I again look to the cliff.

There's nothing there but a sense,

a sense that sends tingles down my spine,

a hair raising sense that even the smallest child knows.

I'm back in the dark running,

a door opens ahead,

light rushing out to meet me.

Through the door,

I make my way up a winding path,

to a cottage long ignored,

dust settles on every surface,

an oven sitting lit in a corner.

I open the oven and the fire whooshes out,

engulfed in flames I run,

again the darkness is all around,

run run run again,

in a never ending cycle.

Till all at once I open my eyes,

and the morning greats me nice and warm,

as I leave my bed,

the dream is already melted far away,

to the recesses of my mind.
