The Practice

The Practice

A Poem by Chin-hooi Ng

About the content of a booklet

The truth is
the lotus has always been clear
in its heart
the winter has signaled
the knell
life would soon be
circled
before the terminus
once more it meditates
looking intently into the mirror
in the water
thinking and reflecting the time
from exuberance
to decay
during the passage
has there been any
dusty spot
how far away still
is goodness
have the teachings
been mastered
has the unsullied realization
been entered
toward the completion
of the monastic cultivation
and practice summed up
by time and space
understanding the purpose
of frost
the meaning
of the chill and cruel
is for the soul
to elevate an eternal
statue
the same cycle
from stagnant water
to frozen snow
then turning stony ice
back into water of springtime
awaiting the next nirvana
in the green of breeze.

If you get more than one nirvana you must be a bodhisattva.
