And so our record deal disintegrated right before our eyes, and we went back to playing high school proms and bars with names like Hurl and Fatzos.
It didn’t dawn on us until we were uncomfortably well into our thirties that we were quickly approaching obsolescence.
Denny, the drummer, came to us after a particularly grueling gig at a house party and announced his retirement from the band.
“I’m gettin’ carpal tunnel, man,” he said, shaking his head and walking away without looking at any of us.
There would be no more tributes to the Sex Pistols or the Dead Kennedys, no more all-nighters, no more living five to a 600 square foot studio apartment with every imaginable rodent and insect occupying our living space, no more knocks on the door in the middle of the night from the L.A.P.D. following up on reports of loud music and fights in the parking lot, no more getting stiffed by bar owners, no more getting stiff for girls who were older than sixteen, (we swear to god), no more of those alleged sixteen-year-old girl’s fathers threatening to blow our heads off, no more bloody noses, no more accidental overdoses, no more girlfriends named Starburst and Aquarius.
The soggy, foggy dream was over.
And even though we had no discernible job skills whatsoever, we all got gigs at the post office as temporary rural route carriers, and even though it bores us, we’ve found that our pillows are a little softer at night. The women we date now have no idea who Sid Vicious was.
Johnny Rotten. I was more into Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Alman Bros., Greg Allman in particular Whipping Post. Disturbed was My band around 2000, or so. Saw them in Fayetteville in 2010. My first husband was a drummer for a local band called Carolina Lip Scorchers. He claimed every other drummer like Phil Collins, was a loser. I lthink he might've realized his error just never admitted it, lol. I like this piece of nostalgia. Man, it made me remember some stuff!

Thanks for the review, Geekay...those were definitely the days and I so miss them. Peace!
I always wanted to be a rock and roll star. The problem was, I can't sing, and I am a mediocre guitar player. It's fun to dream about it though. Sid seems to have fallen into the same ole trap that gets so many promising groups.
I love music, especially the good old true Rock and Roll stuff.
I just recently discovered a group on You Tube called The Baseballs. They're from Germany. They really rock, especially on the song "Never Ever." If you have time, check them out.
P.S. I am not advertising for these guys, I just like good music.
So, this was a great write. I could easily feel what might be going on. I felt a part of it.
Good job.
Surely it's been said that a young person's taste in music is what sets her or him onto the next 'stage' of life. Music touches the human spirit and - when young, is how the heart and all else moves to that special beat you didn't even know you had! Your story-telling is life lived and living, told so very well.. takes a while to move on. I smiled, I almost teared up, I will remember this post. Many thanks, Philip.

Hope you didn't have to work in the rain. Did ya'll get any of the Hurricane? So Devastating for Asheville, my God! Take care.

All is good here. Power went out for 5 hours due to a downed tree.

A finely crafted story of how life used to be in one's younger days and how it changed as time progressed and age became problematic. Thank you for sharing, dear poet...

Thanks, Ken. Anderson was a beast. I just heard that he was very shy off-stage. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but based on his stage persona I would not have thought he was so reserved offstage.
Not a punk. More a hippy earlier than this but otherwise been there, done that, bought the tee. Was a flautist and my hero was Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. But did become an Art student with all that it would entail, then a teacher and now a full time artist living up a mountain. But I really still associated with this lovely, well written story.
Sounds like what happened with my younger brother who moved to California to make it big in rock music, then became an upholsterer. (His idol was Peter Green) Is there some truth in this? Great writing.
I hate writing biographies. I was one of those kids who rode a banana seat bike and watched Saturday morning cartoons and Soul Train. But my mother would never buy any of those sugary cereals for us k.. more..
