a world of paperboys

a world of paperboys

A Poem by Philip Gaber

The  paperboy,

who’s late as usual,

scans the headlines.

Even though his route

size has grown,

not everybody subscribes.

By the time he finishes

delivering the papers,

the corrections outnumber the

facts and the facts

yellow with time,

but the paperboy remains a boy.

Well penned. Without going the inner child route, I don’t think this speaks to that angle, to me, boy/girl/child refers to innocence, maybe unrealized, but innocent on most considerations. The “paper route” is a good analogy to life, a simple labor, out in the world, reading of far away events that don’t age well over time, before the innocent even leaves his neighborhood. Again, well penned.

"the corrections outnumber the facts." Hyperbole, to be sure, but it hit home with me. Mistakes have become quite common in my hometown paper. Gives me the feeling someone is asleep on the bridge.
