Daddy Wore a Green SuitA Poem by Devan McKinleyDaddy wore a green suit, On the day he said good bye. I didn’t understand then Why it made my mommy cry. Daddy wore a green suit, All the way to where he went. He kissed me on the cheek, And said he'd be back when his time was spent. Mommy told me he'd be back, By the spring, no doubt. But Daddy never showed. No matter which door I looked out.
Daddy never saw me hang the star, On the top of the Christmas tree. And Daddy never saw the big blue ribbon, That I won from the spelling bee. Daddy never saw me cry, As I sent my prayers up to the moon. I prayed real hard, That he’d be back home soon. I wrote Daddy once, For the first time in July. I said ‘Mommy is afraid That your commander will stop by.’ I wrote Daddy once, And he finally replied. Now it hangs upon my wall. Every time it makes me cry. Mommy never knew, That Father-Daughter day passed by. My class looked at me weird cause I was alone. So I figured id tell them why. “My daddy is…uhh…well far away. I know its farther than an hour.” They all just looked at me. Their faces were still sour. The teacher said “You see kids, Her dad is in He’s a solider in the war, But you’ll meet him when he's back.” Mommy never knew, That when I tip toed past her door, That I could hear her crying, And the phone fall to the floor. Daddy wore a green suit, On the day he said good bye. Not only to me and Mommy, But the world that passed him by. Mommy wore a black suit, On the day we said good bye. Taps filled our hearts with Daddy, As me and Mommy cried.
