That Was Close

That Was Close

A Poem by Devan McKinley

Here I am beside you.

Snuggled all up tight.

Wish I didn't have to leave.

Wish you could spend the night.

My hands are wrapped inside yours.

A perfect girft, if you ask me.

You make me happy when I least expect it.

And thats how it should be.

The way you smile makes me, too.

And your eyes are warm and gentle.

Id open up my entire self,

but theres things that are sentimental.

Id like to be able to say them.

Those three words that lover choose.

But when I look inside my fragile heart,

I've got too much to lose.

Yet, I open up my mouth to risk it all,

Because its you that I want most.

But then swallow it back down again.

Phew. That was close.

To be reminded of the fear of letting loose one's emotions, that precipice from which we have all stood; this was a great read.
