Free will

Free will

A Poem by Sheri Lynn

Swallowed up by the darkness of hopelessness
Pounding of the heart as panic and fear creeps
Overshadowing all hope to escape the confining dimness

Hard to speak
Hard to think
Hard to breathe

Black hole pulling one’s energy, to weak to fight
Soft whimpering cries from the darkness escapes
From every direction the cries echoed softly as they slowly faded

Speak
Speak of the terror filling your heart
Speak of the dreams no longer in reach

In the utter darkness a tiny light of hope protrudes
Paralyzed, unable to walk to the light
Willing, praying, yelling the body to get up

Think
Think of the family who needs you
Think of the life not yet lived

Slowly the aching muscles begin working together
Struggling with every step as the light gets closer
Excitement swells with heart pounding out of control

Breathe
Breathe
Breathe

Relief fills the heart as the sun comes in view
Suddenly surrounded by the warmth
Breathless by the beauty
Sweet aromas fill my head

Shackles broken
No longer bound by her own fears of love
Free will found its way home

To me, it seemed like this poem could either be about urging oneself out of depression or a near-death experience, during which the decision was made to live rather than sink into unconsciousness.
It's probably not about either though, haha.
I quite liked the "Speak...Speak" and "Think...Think" stanzas; they give a sense of the narrator's inner dialogue, interspersed between description of the bleak situation - and were also kind of uplifting, being pro-survival.
Overall, a good piece.
Thanks for posting it.

p.s.
"Black hole pulling one's energy, to weak to fight" {too weak]
