DepartureA Poem by c.m.I am afraid, and the fear grows daily. My eyes open to see you hurting, Sitting upward, head cradled in your hands. You rise, dressing silently in the shining lunar light. You seem not to realize you've woken me, and carry on. My mind races, deciding whether to question this departure.
The stairs creak beneath your weight, The door clicking shut behind you, almost silently. I tiptoe to the window, watching your movements.
You stroll the streets, glowing beneath the streetlamp. Your hands running through your chocolate hair. The look on your face unreadable from the frosted window. Your breath visible in the cold air, your voice faint.
My heart aches watching you pace back and forth, Seeing the pained look upon your gorgeous features. Your gate hesitant as you move toward the door, Your hand waiting as it reaches the handle.
The click of the lock engaging below wakes my worrying mind. I slide into the sheets once more, quickly and quietly. I smooth the wrinkles your side to restore its original state. I shut my crying eyes, hearing your feet tap every stair.
I feel the bed deepen as you slide into place behind me, Your arms wrapping tightly around my unmoving waist. I shift to look into your darkened hazel eyes, Begging you to keep your presence. A promise you’ll stay whispered in my ear, The tears fall as I shut my eyes, knowing the truth. © 2010 c.m.Author's Note
