I trust, I must

I trust, I must

A Poem by Cheryl J. Turner

I weep, in deep

Your dagger is aimed

Aimed at my chest

Where effect will be best

And though and lo

Your dagger is aimed

I trust, I must

Remain unashamed

I weep, in deep

Your dagger is aimed

Aimed at my mind

Oh, what a bind

And though and lo

Your dagger is aimed

I trust, I must

Cherish the gained.

Interesting structure and use of rhyme... I felt the 'oh what a bind' line sounded a little too colloquial somehow but other than that the sense of being deep wounded was strong... and I was intrigued by the last line, wondering what the poet had gained... Maybe the fact of having stood apart from the attacker...

the only dagger you see coming your way is in your mind, and you can walk away from that
