Coming in Waves

Coming in Waves

A Poem by Alex

Anxiousness comes in waves
Crashing on the shores of my bloodstream
Ripping apart every nerve,
Till each tendon stands stiff and on edge
(I’m in no shape to live like this.)
The restlessness is just a byproduct;
A toxic waste that remains.
Shaking hands,
An unsteady heartbeat"
Thump                                 thump
*pause*
Tumpthumpthump.
And just like that
In a single (cold) snap
It’s hard to breathe.
(The listlessness of laboring lungs.)
My own body turned against itself,
My mind in revolt.
(Or revolution. Evolution?)
Every thought a revolving door,
‘Round and round and round it goes,
When will it stop? No one can know.
And so it goes.
All this running around while sitting still.
Playing hopscotch on thin ice,
Praying the stone I toss doesn’t fall in
In a cavern in a hole in the arctic abyss"
Of me.

Truth is, I don’t know which me is down there.

Yesterday, upon the stair
I met a man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
I wish, I wish he’d go away.
