Redemption

Redemption

A Poem by Alex

I could still feel your fingers running across my skin
The taste of honey lips on mine
While stars wrote our fates in the sky
Tracing the constellations in your freckles and birthmarks
I did not foresee the outcome
Cupid wrote tragedy for us in the cosmos
The calamity could not be hindered
I’ve dragged myself through hell with a chain around my heart
But I made it out alive, the Fallen Angel is an easy bribe
The treaty was signed with blood, but no finger prick was needed,
And the ruby liquid dripped down my leg, the warning went unheeded.

I stumbled and I fell, tripping as I ascended the sulfur staircase
Talons clawed with each step underfoot
Hooks sinking into my tarnished skin in attempt to bind
On I trudged, whispers of failure and worthlessness ringing in my ears
Like sweet comfortable nothings
My dry bones were breaking, my fragile faith was shaking
Kicking and screaming, fighting and shouting
I went on, growing weak and weary
Yet, just as I was about to collapse,
Let my body go limp and give in to damnation and sin
I felt a hand and heard a voice
I Am
It must be admitted, I was terrified.
So long I had been on my own,
Always fighting, always building walls,
Always alone
I Am
I Am
And as I gave up and let the hands gently carry me
I finally knew.

“Hallelujah! Hallelujah” I cried out as I fell to my knees.
Breaking into the blinding sunlight
I raised my war worn hands in praise.
Alive, I am alive.
I am free.
I am clean.
I have been saved.
And I am loved.
