Asthetics

A Poem by Alex

I.
“Tell me a story,” he said.
She thought for a moment.
“Okay, dear child, I will tell you a story. About Love.”

II.
Too Dark for Delight
Too Tan for Taste
She’s got a Pretty face
But what a Waste
Too many inches
On Hips and Height
Two thin Lips
That just don’t sit right
She’s cold like the night
As giving as the earth
Easy as a cool breeze
Can you measure her worth?

She’s a Paradox of Value.

III.
Every step on the sandy beach slices his feet like glass.
A place of joy and happiness eons ago now brings only pain.
Painful memories.
Longing, Hoping, Wishing.
Only at night, under the soft moon beams
Can he find peace.
Pieces of who he is and was float in and out
Like the ever ebbing tide.
Saline rushes down and for a moment he is lost.
But looking out, all is forgiven.
His sins are washed clean.
Off in the distance,
Friends laugh and play, never knowing the courage it takes
To take that first step onto the cool grains.
They’ll never have to.
He does.
But his love for them,
Love for her,
Pulls him onward,
Steadying his tired soles.

IV.
Teeter-totter, teeter-totter.
Standing on the edge.
It’s a long way down.
One foot in front of the other
Brings the inevitable fall ever closer.
Sharp intake of breath.
The final sway.
Plunge.
Free Fall from all.
Plummet towards the hot hell ground.
Heart rush.
   Down.
      Down.
        Down.
But just before the hit,
Time stops.
The cord recoils.
The bungee holds.
Suspended.
Floating.
But above all,
Saved.

V.

Ring around the rosy
Pocket full of posy
Ashes to ashes
We all fall down

Ring around my withered heart
Pocket full of blood
As you took the parting bow
I finally understood

VI.
Will you be my parachute?
Will you be my lifeline?
Will you be my bungee cord?
Will you save me this time?

(I know you will. I believe in you.)

VII.
“And they lived happily ever after.”
A single tear fell as she quietly closed the holy book of trials and lies.
Her eyes wide open glanced at the boy, fast asleep.
She prayed his dreams were far sweeter than hers.
He stirred slightly, and a mumbled “I love you, Mom,” escaped his lips.
“I love you too,” she whispered into his ear.
Kiss. Tuck. Lights out.
She smiled to herself as she walked to her room.
At least tonight,
Her hopes would outweigh her sorrows.
And that is all that matters.

Hope Never Dies.
