Escaping Vapors

Escaping Vapors

A Story by Cherrie Palmer

Skimming over the face of the sand gleaming waves of heat, escaping vapors breaking free of the blistering earth, only to find the noonday sun waiting.  The surface of the sand appears as a thousand serpents slithering  across the waist-lands.

The sandy landscape gave way to what was a lush green land. However, now in its path is spindling splinters of dried-out fescue that is now russet and brittle. No Man's land a living breathing beast, who demands all that you have and gives only death in return. Even the wind is without mercy, you will find no stay on her wings,  as it steals your very breath and deepeds your need.

Fatigue and thirst is all this place procures. True thirst is all consuming. It quickens the steps of the weary, driving them onward in hopes of a single drop of water. Hunger has no meaning in the face of this dearth. It compels the weak and makes wild the timid. It is a relentless need that must be countered. The waist-lands will not yield to change nor to time, only to the seasons and the angle of the sun.

OH gee, at first I thought you might be talking about Oklahoma, lol It seems as though it feels like a desert at times.
The descriptions in this were great. Love the description of true thirst. So true. The last line is a perfect ending to the this story.

With this piece, you reveal the layers of the desert are deep indeed. An enticing description, from one who has obviously met the fatigue and thirst with meaning of her own.

No doubt the desert can be very unforgiving to the human body... it may be God's way to test our will... some very intense description that makes me sweat just reading it.
