I’m lost in the pervading filigree of flakes. The three-dimensional pattern of snow is laced with a touch of vertigo, leaving me with the feeling of falling. I’ve lost my way. I stand in the clearing only feet from my cabin, but the thicker the snow, the worse my sense of direction.
I can no longer see my tracks, the wailing of last night’s wind has stopped, leaving mounds of snowdrifts in my path, and a peaceful sight before me. No color to be seen except my own red hat. My heartbeat is my only compass, which finds me treading ground, and a snowballing panic moving me forward. The sound of not is deafening, absorbing both light and commotion.
No trace of smoke rolling from the chimney or the giggling from my children making angels in the yard. Which way do I take my bundle of wood? Which way is home? When all I can hear is the sound of naught.
I like this! Your emotion is real, the fear palpable. The labyrinth of light, snowfall the snowdrifts are perfect descriptions of the subtle dangers of the season.
Most excellent.
I love this "sound of not". This little story brings me into a life lived close to nature when winter truly effects are very life. Very well written, almost a poem of sorts.
It is other worldly and at first disconcerting, until you compare it to the sounds of a large city. When nothing moves, when there's the sound of not, we should all take a breath. Cherrie you've captured this in amber. A winter blizzard leaves such stillness in it's wake, but take heart, you're not lost.
Oh the sound of not...love that title....everything is at a standstill and appears desolate in the snow. I love that line 'No color to be seen except of my own red hat.' A very vivid image...I like the creativity in this. You captured it so well...good work...
You must be in the midwest right now...ha ha! An interesting piece, short but says everything it needs to say. The feeling of isolation is perfectly defined. Nicely done!
I am a published poet and love poetry. After a lifetime of country living, I'm making a move back to town. I find my surroundings a great inspiration to me. I also have two books on Amazon Kindle: .. more..
