The Curtain of Night

The Curtain of Night

A Poem by Cherrie Palmer
"

Villanelle 19 lines Aba, ab1, ab3, ab1, ab3, ab13

"
"Shall we begin?" asks the Sun.
Casting his light for the Sky to see.
But the curtain of Night still hung.

While fading stars grew sullen.
toward the horizon, the light was carried.
"Shall we begin?" asks the Sun.

I have the Night on the run.
The wafting breeze has found its qi.
But the curtain of Night still hung.

Coy was the wind as to the mist it clung.
Waltzing across both land and sea.
"Shall we begin?" asks the Sun.

Who grew impatient and wanted fun,
and so, he rose, shining over the lea.
But the curtain of Night still hung.

As Night's morning vespers were spun,
thinning to a milky tea.
"Shall we begin?" asks the Sun.
But the curtain of Night still hung.

I love the repetition in this poem; it makes an important statement about those behind the curtain....what is going on ...are there dark secrets? I feel for the sun ,which you portray almost as a person trying to awaken someone who wants to sleep...or is there death behind the curtain?...leaves the reader thinking ...and that's great!!!!

dearest Cherrie... this is my newly found favorite.
Our Weather has been exactly like you have penned this Poem.
We have had many days of Rain after a long drought. However, on a number of days ...
the Sun did burst forth with warmth that gave us energy. I planted many garden
plants and they have bloomed like Dancers in a Broadway Play. Thanks for giving
my feelings a place to prop up on an over-stuffed Sofa and hum along with your Symphony.
Be blessed and keep Cool. gently, Pat

A Great Villanelle is hard to achieve Cherrie. One thinks of Dylan Thomas of course, and Empson, and Auden. I think you nailed it pretty good ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Beautiful piece Cherrie. The villanelle is such a lovely form. Wonderful imagery here in the fight between the sun and night. Very well penned poet. Have a great Friday.

I love Villanelles and this was so beautiful to read. There is a tussle between the night and the sun and the night wants to hold on tight till can, not wanting to fade into the sunlight. I loved the poem concept and the lovely effect created by the imagery you used here. Thank you for sharing. Loved it!
