Smiles

Smiles

A Poem by Cherrie Palmer
"

Richard and I co-wrote this poem. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did writing it.

"
Smiles . . . .

You smile at me,
I smile at thee …
all of our world's aglow.
Then, everywhere,
all through sweet air,
we smile again 'n know.

So plain to see
a gift to be …
your smile, once unwrapped, grows.
It fills my heart
and once we start,
feeling between us flows.

Each heartbeat thrums,
throughout us comes
a melody of smiles.
With every chance
in warm romance,
a heartbreak reconciles.

It's never stale,
warms like hot ale …
intoxicates the heart.
Blurring all fear,
drying each tear;
asking, never to part.

With smiles we're blest,
I must attest,
it's yours that rights all wrong.
'Twas just last night
we found delight,
when kisses turned to song.

Is a smile rare
or warm to share
in this world of sorrow …
rare, like a gem
or a po-em,
with love for tomorrow?

Rare as pure gold,
lovers who hold
close, will soon become one.
No matter when,
from deep within …
smiles are pleasures begun.

I'm not really into strict form but this gave me a pleasant frisson of shivers and a smile as the title would suggest. A delightful read in any structure.

I am not a scholar of prosody but a liker of poems, and as such I listen for advice to the poets I read whose work I like.
Mary Oliver is high on my list. Her advice is to not use “poetic language”, which, if you took her advice, would mean reworking the first two lines to remove the poetic word “thee”. Perhaps a revised second line: you smiled at me/my lips felt envy.
Anyway, just my thoughts. Your mileage may vary.

Well done Cherrie and Richard. You have combined your ideas here to create a poem fot the moment. With everything around us being so gloomy at the present time 'Smiles' certainly brightened the outlook. Felt the warmth.
