Nails on wood

Nails on wood

A Poem by Cherrie Palmer

The depths of night broken with the t, t, t, t, of nails on wood,
and a cold nose met the bottom of my dangling foot.
Quickly followed by the slight rattling of a lid,
and the gurgling sputter of the percolator.

On the heels of sound raced the delightful aroma of coffee.
Knowing good and well this means morning Dolly my Australian Shepperd whined.
A faint rumble grew in the distance as the spatter of rain tapped on the window.

Warm covers were applied from my chin covering the top of my head, and I reveled in the warmth.

The crackling of lightning cracked and boomed. That and the dog demanded me arise.

The onomatopoeia in the first line is great. This write touches on all the senses. Yes, having a pet means getting up when you really want to stay 'neath the covers a while longer. I liked the homey feel of this poem. Lydi**

Thank you. I enjoyed relaying the event. Trying to keep the visual simple to see.
Cherrie:
Nicely descriptive. I wonder what it would sound like with more immediacy and less telling? a wet cold nudges my foot
Gurgles and sputters and scents of morning.
What do you think?

Originally that is what I wanted a writing filled with sounds. I may have to give it a better try.
i'll take that kind of morning anyday. not sure about getting up to walk or let out the dog though - prefer to stay under those warm covers listening to the rain and smelling that coffee. very serene and relatable write. well done ... :)

Thank you I look forward to returning the visit.
I heard this poem loud and clear! Listened carefully to the write. The sound of a wet nose chasing coffee had me tintabulating the ear of a stormy bark. I must need a cochlear implant in my mind!

Wow, lightning and a dog wanting out; I suppose. One says to stay in bed, the other says "Get up I need to, well, you know. :) --- Such a nice flow to this, and the visuals were just right, I do believe that I can see the Australian Shepperd trotting from room to room.

Bossy, aren't they? 😀
But would we have them any other way? Dogs often know life better than we do. If we were to emulate their lessons more we would fight less. They love unconditionally. They know and accept their place in a pack willingly. They serve without question. And yet, they always have a way of making us check ourselves. They may be the wisest companions Man ever adopted. Wonderful poem, Cherrie.
