Winter Rations

Winter Rations

A Poem by Cherrie Palmer

Within this little hovel,

is the place that we call home.

Counting sister Sue,

she and hers make 32.

Bulging at the seams

the Winter air is nixed,

and beneath the snowy blanket,

all the forest rests.

Now our neighbor to the East

peers across the way.

Momma's voice is fretful

and we promise to obey.

Perched high above us

the predator shops for treats.

Now little mice do surrey,

to take a winter nap,

but first let’s dine on rations,

as we torment

that old barn cat.

I don't know if cats kill mice for the thrill of it, or play them to death for the pleasure of it. Perhaps, a little of both. It's hard to imagine how God's little creatures get through such frigid winters, but they do. I'd be taking them all in - the ole "hey mom, look what followed me home" . Wonderful read, Cherrie. Loved the innocence of it, and play.

Thank you Gene it was a fun little story the kids liked it. :)
I love this. I was born on a farm (no doctor) & I made 9 kids between them, but they always picked up strays along the way . . . families in hard times, needing to give up a kid or two for a bit. I wonder how a woman can do more than 2, but these women with huge families boggle my mind! (((HUGS)))

that poor old cat.
fun write, Cherrie.
Winter is a tough time for everyone.
and we have been in one for two years now, so a bit of humor is so welcomed.
