Chapter 1

Once again, the moon waxed bold and a lonely wolf stood alone.

A viscous bear was in pursuit, and our little Ella must hide from the brut.

The sunshine could not be seen within the forest. The dark path and dense leaves did not slow down Brutus a 4-year-old black bear. He had been chasing a young wolf named Ella. Her beautiful chestnut billowed and sparkling eyes of blue searched, as her four swift feet carried her.  She has been running from the bear off and on for three days. They were playing a deadly game of 'cat and mouse', and Ella had never been the mouse before now.

Ella eased through a stream to hide her scent from the bear. She spied a small fish just the right size for a quick snack and ate it.  A small squirrel climbed the nearest tree. He was afraid of being next. In the distance the bear roared. The little squirrel hid, and Ella dashed out of the creek bed, and headed across a  field of tall grass.

Brutus quickly caught up with Ella, she quickened her pace as predator became prey. Strong legs carried her up a steep ridge, paws skimming the rocky surface. The climb gave way to a plateau, where only a sheer cliff waited. The bear stood on hind feet, rage ripped from his lungs. Song birds took to flight and Ella lowered her stance. Fury had him in pursuit of the wolf, never again would her kind enter his territory.

All options were gone she had no safe retreat. Fear told her to jump or be eaten. With a flying leap she jumped to freedom. Ribs smacked into trees, her weight broke small limbs. Larger branches tossed her aside until the ground and she met.  She escaped with her life. The price, an injured paw. She limped away a little battered and wiser. She cradled her front paw and searched for a hiding place.

2 years later Peyton's fame continues! Now in the 6th grade in guessing. I'm hoping when I look ill find more chapters. I like the turn about of the predator getting a dose of what it's like to be prey. We had a dog named Ella. Elegant was her full name. This is a pretty intense story actually. But that's life in the wild!

A wolf alone would stand little chance. Flight was her only option. Well written...

I have only begun reading but am already enthralled. How wonderful that you and your granddaughter are writing together. I can't think of a more important legacy to leave with her. She is following in your footsteps no doubt :-)

She is the star of the 4th grade. Which trickles me. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
His furry had him in pursuit? Fury? I found this Freudian slip quite funny. But not the line his rage ripped from his lungs quite scary I like this again more than the 1st

lol I didn't check my helper I'll get that. thank you I wasn't sure if that worked.
Amazing! -- just this morning you mentioned this book to me & later I open my reading library & this is on the top, ready for me to review this morning. That kind of serendipity is fun. As always I love your writing, your imaginative way of telling a story, & your details personifying the creatures of nature. Now I can also try to imagine these snippets of story from a different point of view! *smile* Fondly, Margie
