Once Upon A Moonless Night

Once Upon A Moonless Night

A Poem by Cherrie Palmer
"

The sneaky wind

"

Once upon a moonless night darkened clouds filled up the sky.

An eastern breeze swept a path, so the moon could see the water’s edge.

Silvery beams on the water danced, and the little breeze laid down her head.

Night now full the day complete so too the moon laid low to sleep.

The morning sun began to climb but a dreary rain refused her light.

The eastern wind aired a boast. “How fair a light the moon doth hold.”

A jealous sun blazed so bright and dried the day, then fell the night.

Once again, the moon waxed bold and asked the wind, why a lie was told.

Her only defense she whispered low, “I’m tired of the rain and hate the snow.

Wonderful use of words and thoughts. I enjoyed the description. Made me see and feel the desire to feel the sun. Here in Michigan, can go thirty days without beloved sun. Thank you Cherrie for sharing the amazing poetry.

This is really nice, love the idea and characterization of the insecurities and idiosyncrasies of the moon and the sun and the elements.

I thought it added a fun element to the poem.
Cherrie... your writing is soft and lovely as the falling snow..... My son is married to Leilani who is the mother of two young girls. My granddaughters are half Navajo and they learn the dances and many customs. They attend school in SLC, Utah and their Father my son Robert takes them 🎣 sometimes on top of the mountain. Best wishes, Pat

Thank you Ana
Gorgeous, lyrical poetry. Great use of classical language and sweet, fable-like style. “Night now full the day complete so too the moon laid low to sleep”- perfect line. Lilting flow and beautiful rhyme. Pristine, vivid jewels of imagery. I loved this from beginning to end Cherrie.

I can't remember having this much rain before. I love a rainy day but the moon deserves some love too. :)

The imagery here is so beautiful!
"The little breeze laid down her head" and "A jealous sun blazed so bright and dried the day, then fell the night" are my favourite lines. I especially like the rhythm of the second line I quoted.
I noticed someone else (Lydia) commented that this was like a lullaby - I agree. Lovely work.
