Four-thirty comes early in the morning, but I cannot pass up these silent moments of morning. All the curtains are opened so I can take in the fading stars of night and witness the birth of a new day. A fresh covering of frost outlines the railing to my deck. It is a crisp contrast to the night and will glisten in a short time with daybreak. My white rose bush is void of blooms, but her tender foliage is jeweled brightly in thick green leaves. So many of my songbirds are silent in winter. They are much to busy eating to sing.
December's song is that of the giant redheaded woodpecker. As the mornings blush blooms to a white glow, he begins his song. Not his exotic call I hear so often at mid-day. This morning he calls till his mate joins him. He descends his branch and joins her. She has landed on Autumn's castaway leaves. For a short moment, their song rings out.
Despite the cold, I have my kitchen window open, giving me a front row seat to the duet. The scent of a hickory log smoldering nearby greets me. It is a pleasant aroma that blends nicely with the ham in my skillet. Once the morning greeting is complete, each bird takes to a tree, and the percussions begin. First, the sound is in unison. Then a counter beat begins. A Hermit Thrush whistles at the pair. They ignore him as do I, breakfast is cooked and the morning serenade is over. The nutty aroma of my coffee greets me, and I head to my keyboard to capture the moment.
Cherrie I do believe you are a lover of nature as I am. I also like to view the dark skies before dawn breaks and listen to the dawn chorus. You have given me a glimpse into your living and I enjoyed it very much. The aroma from the coffee smells good too. Lovely write.
And boy did you. What a great peak into the morning. Birds are so fascinating, the comings and goings, the songs and wayward strangers that pop up. They are great painters of the season, as are you with this fabulous vignette. Great writing!

Coffee and Winter. Perfect pair. I open the window too. When I cook. Coffee, Winter morning and writing. Perfect three to know. Thank you dear Cherrie for sharing the amazing story and your thoughts.

This is brilliant, beautiful & enchanting. These are all the things I love about morning. I could write a different poem for each morning & that's what I've felt inspired to do after reading some of your short vignettes lately. I am very impressed at your powers of observation & how you weave together what you're observing with what you're doing or seeing along your everyday path. Your details are so enchanting, I want to teach myself to look at my own world this way, so the magic can go on & on! (((HUGS))) Fondly Margie

You would shine at morning snapshots.
dear Cherrie... you have orchestrated a December song... with morning crystals forming in the early morning dawn. In early December we had Cardinals and Bluejays in our front and back yards. We have moved into a Bird Sanctuary... all we need to do is put bird feeders up and around. I love the music and the peaceful feelings that you paint. truly, Pat

many Birds have stopped by for seed and singing songs of raindrops and sunflowers... tweeting with new found friends in newly feathered colors and in need of rest and a sip of nectar. I see three Chickadees dancing and romancing among the berries. Life is good... but waiting for the proper vaccine is a bother. So many precious souls have gone asunder. A very quiet remembrance of the best of life is waiting under cover... keeping a distance.
But Hope remains and will blossom come Spring or sooner. tenderly, Pat
this gives us a taste of what life can be like.. nowt unnecessarily fancy or frivolous, but practical, wholesome, fresh and comfortably right... with nature all around and enjoyed... just what the doctor ordered.. N
