last stop light

last stop light

A Poem by Cherrie Palmer
"

waiting for summer

"

Sun’s liquid waves

Has me retreating

behind retro shades

Hair blowing wild

Windows down

  Skynyrd high

Cornering curves

dusting a blue sky

A basket waits

 for our beach retreat

Strawberry wine

and Coppertone 8

cool Pall Mall

In need of a light

Is met with a match

At the last stop light

Now all 4 barrels scream’n

And the gas gage is travel’n

And the day is waist’n

For the memories were make’n

I could almost smell the Coppertone and feel the wind through my hair! The brevity of your lines kicked this into high gear for me. Love the anticipation, felt the rush, and was literally - there! Much applause, Cherrie!

I know that is a lifelong smell and glad you got to come along.
Love the rhyme scheme. You described this so well I almost felt like I was there. I thought Kool and Pall Mall were different brands of cigarettes though.

You can never, ever go wrong with a little Lynard Skynard.

Excellent bounty of remembered summer delights! My favorite thing about good writing is when there are tons of specific details to paint a unique picture of a relatable scene. Grammatically: in line 2, "has" might be better as "have" . . . & line 15, "meet" might be better as "met". Well done carefree slang lingo for ending words in the final lines (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
