A War Can Change Everything, Chapter 3A Chapter by Charlotte Hannah BrookesAlex was unpacking in his room, when a voice spoke from behind him. “Willing to be helpful?” It was a woman voice, and when he turned around, he saw a small brunette before him. “How can I help-” he cut off, and paled slightly “You’re a vampire.” Now vampires were creatures that even witches didn’t go near. They were difficult to trust, pale, and of course, they liked the taste of anyone. “I thought vampires opted out of participating in this war.” “Our Queen was killed by the Darkness. It made us change our mind.” “Oh " I’m sorry to hear that. Feel free to ask for help.” He stood up from kneeling beside his drawers where he was folding up clothes and putting them in. “What’s up stranger?” he smiled. Alex was a friendly person, someone who always did what he could to help others, rather than to help himself. The stranger stepped into the room “Oh I’m-" She cut off and laughed slightly “Wow, very blue.” The entire room was enhanced with the theme of water. Alex laughed slightly “That was my reaction " I’m a water elementalists and apparently they like irony when it comes to designing our rooms. Shame they got it wrong.” “What do you mean?” “Water isn’t blue.” “It isn’t? Then what colour is it?” “How about you tell me your name and I’ll answer that.” “Oh " sorry, I don’t meet new people often, I’m Aubrée” “Alexander, but I prefer Alex. Now, why don’t I show you the true colour of water?” “And how are you going to do that?” “There’s a pool. Let’s go down
there.” He walked out of his room, and led her downstairs to the basement. As her brother was discovering something new, so was Katherina. She stepped out of the lift, only to be stopped by a strong torso in front of her. She looked up and froze “V-Vampire, Vampire” She stumbled back into the lift. He followed and pressed the button for the highest floor. “You’re a vampire.” Growing up, she had been taught to stay away from them “A vampire. Don’t hurt me. Please.” The stranger watched her for a couple of minutes, silently, before finally saying “You’re going to be an awful soldier in this war.” “Pardon?” “We’re here to train are we not? To learn not to fear and how to fight. You look pretty afraid” “Old habits die hard.” She muttered. “I’m Eric, I’m not going to hurt you " Just to clarify that.” “You’re not?” “I’m not.” He sighed “This is going to be the problem around here, why we didn’t want to join in the first place. You all assume that we’re going to kill you. But we don’t want the Darkness around anymore either. They’re dangerous, and yes, even us scary vampires are terrified by it.” “I’m sorry.” She said “I’m Katherina, I didn’t mean to " offend you. I don’t know, I guess I’m just not used to the ally thing. I’d rather be home, with someone else fighting here.” “You didn’t volunteer?” “No, my brother did, and where he goes I go. Anyway, my parents said it was my duty.” By this point Katherina was pressed against the wall, with Eric’s hands on either side of her face. Her heart quickened. “We’re all here to learn, don’t worry about it.” The lift pinged open, and a voice said “What do you think you’re doing?” Eric pulled away and turned to face Will. He glanced at Katherina “As I said, Allies.” He winked at her and left the lift, to be replaced by Wills presence. “Are you okay? Did he hurt you?” “Why so protective Time Boy?” “You’re my future wife. Isn’t it my place to defend your honour?” “My honour, is intact.” “I’m glad, I’d hate to have to kill a vamp. You know how they get when one of them dies, they all want revenge.” He rolled his eyes. “It isn’t funny. We’re supposed to be…” “Allies? Do you really think that’s going to last?” “No, but I think we can at least try to win this war.” “Well we have hope, don’t we. Hope and time.”
“I didn’t bring my swim suit.” “What? Can’t swim in your underwear?” He smirked and stripped into his underwear, before diving in. “I guess I can.” She said before too stripping, and climbing in. “So, water looks blue right?” “Right…?” “But if you do this” He moved his hands and a ball of water floated in between them. “And then you take away the colours that aren’t needed " the light etcetera.” He did so “And you get this” Left was a ball the colour of Aqueomisity. Aubrée was speechless “That’s…that’s beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like it before.” “Most people haven’t. But I think it’s one of the most amazing things in the world.” “What do you call it?” “Aqueomisity. It’s one of the most beautiful things in the world.” “It isn’t the most beautiful?” They were now almost touching each other, having unconsciously moved closer in the water. “Not when it’s compared to you” © 2013 Charlotte Hannah Brookes |
