Escalators

Life has its ups & downs

He spoke to her when he did not deserve her.

                                      She listened to him when she knew better.

 

Now they pass each other

  as if on escalators

             

             one

        going

up

one

          going

                   down

 

They turn back, each to the other

                

              one

        looking

up

one

         looking

                    down

 

Each shrinking into the crowd

           as

               escalator

                              steps

  collapse                   

                into

                        an

                             endless

                                                                   void
