My Quiet Friend

My Quiet Friend

A Story by Charlie B
"

After a series of gruesome murder burglaries, a sinister man befriends an eight year old girl with only one intention; for her to let him in.

"
My daddy always told me not to talk to strangers. Not to answer the door to to anyone, not to answer the phone unless it was someone that I knew, but he was different. He was my friend.

He knocked on my window with two firm but quiet thuds. I rubbed my eyes sleepily, and got out of bed. He was standing at my window, waving into it.

I waved back and walked towards the window. I unclipped the lock on the top and slid it open, careful not to make to much noise. The man put a hand on my shoulder and walked me back to my bed, pulling the sheets down so they hung over the mattress.

"Do you want tea?" I asked with a wide smile on my face, but the man only raised a single finger to his clasped lips and softly shushed me. I eagerly nodded and quickly raised a finger to my lips, mirroring his movements. He smiled a sinister grin, and with gloved hands, he lifted me onto the bed and pulled the covers over me, snuggly tucking me in.

He gave me a kiss on the forehead and walked towards the door. He looked back at me and hesitated before opening it. He raised his hands as if he was trying to cover his eyes with the sheets. At first I didn't understand but after a second time, I did. I raised them above my head and the man turned back towards the door. The door opened, then ever so silently shut again.

I closed my eyes and let the blanket fall over my face as I heard the faint thump of footsteps above me. I thought back to the other times he had played with me. In the sandbox at the park, the time he took me to get ice cream, and especially the time he took me to see his room.

The footsteps suddenly stopped somewhere in the hallway. The creak of a door made stir beneath the sheets and blankets. I wasn't afraid of him because he wouldn't hurt me. But there was one person he wanted to really scare, my mommy's boyfriend, Mike. I thought to how Mike talked to me, but my memories were interrupted by a piercing scream followed by shrieks of pain and agony. I giggled under the sheets as Mike screamed and begged for his life, then he went silent.

The footsteps started back towards the hallway and down the stairs. The door to my room then opened completely. I pulled down the sheets and he walked towards the bed. He unzipped his coat and pulled out a white wrapper with a stick in the bottom.

"Fudge pop?" I asked innocently, and the man silently nodded. He extended out his arm and let the frozen treat lay flat in his palm. I took it from him and squealed excitedly as I unwrapped the red smeared wrapper, separating it from my delicious treat. I took a large bite as the man walked back towards the window.

"Do you want tea now?" I asked, but he didn't say a word, or even look back. He just disappeared through the open window into the darkness of the night, leaving Mike gutted in his bed and me enjoying my treat in mine.

Oh quite morbid indeed. We never really truly know how the main character feels or if they know what's really happening as they seem to be so young. Nor do we know exactly who this mysterious person is. My guess, personally is that he is the protagonists real father. Then again it could also be an imaginary friend and that the protagonist is seeing this person but really the main character is the one doing harm. Of course that depends on how deep you want to take it. The point is it leaves you wondering who the heck this guy is. And it's creepy.

Good show!
