A Poem by Auden

Ain't nobody that can sing like me,
Ain't nobody that can sing like me.
Is it true for everyone?
I shall like to think so,
I see them conforming.
Pulling me in, too.
Why, oh why, is she there?

Could it be taken easily, that lone path?
Wouldn't it be grand, if it was my path,
And my lovers, for together we would take it.
But what about her?

Is she mad, sad? Broken and lonely?
Only wish that bird would sing and
Leave me or keep me.
No, not love, but yes, love.
What is wrong?

We are hers, but she is not ours.
Unrequited and lost, she drifts away.
Well it be one less?
Will she be gone forever?
Lord, I pray not. But it is inevitable.

If those who have lost, I am but found.

Like "On Lasting Life" I have a few interpretations.
That's a good thing though, it allows the poem to have a wider audience.
Despite not being able to make a clear conviction on what this piece means to me, I still enjoyed reading. Thank you for sharing it!
