A Poem by Auden

The suspense of knowing pulls me under a little more
Dreams show truth, prayers do and don't
Red, green, yellow signs show what? Truth or lies?

The waves change, being cold and hot.
Sometimes it doesn't matter when life catches up.
When it hasn't, it does.
Sinking, sinking, sinking.
Deep under the sand of confusion.
When will the truth come out?

Changing tables, glimpses, but why?
The pen wants me to go on, so does my heart.
But something holds me back.
When will I know? I see the face everywhere,
Just staring.

I'm walking across a broken bridge.
One foot steps forward slowly, testing it's strength.
My strength. The strength to stay strong, not giving in to the face.
Don't look. It will take you in, swallowing your soul. It is.
Part of me wants to show I am worthy, those cold eyes.

Searching through a maze, trying to find myself.
Can't seem to find what I'm looking for.
On a turnpike without money.
Can't get through the door. I see through the windows.
They are teasing.

This piece had a certain desperation while at the same time remaining calm and expectant throughout.
