Secrets of My Restlessness

Secrets of My Restlessness

A Poem by Neva Flores Smith - Changefulstorm
"

They show themselves revealing nothing.............

"

I stare at cracks which show themselves yet reveal nothing
Until a breeze of perfection falls on their demise
All I can do is wonder why I never knew they could speak
Or what they have hidden and how it got there
To spread into what I have become

I cannot help but feel these cracks have blown me a kiss
Poured their secrets into this my restlessness
Cutting ties I have no doubt, with all that never ends
Should I smile in knowing there is much more
Waiting here in beauty to be seen

Drifting together in a tangled mesh these cracks form paths
Among dry leaves that now whisper to me alone
Asking where my heart passed in these years now gone
Leaving me wondering if I should follow
The distance where they roam

I now stand here staring at these cracks impressed into my soul
Realizing they show themselves revealing nothing
All I can do is wonder how they got here in voices silently
And I smile in knowing there is much more
Inside me as beauty to be seen

This poem wasn’t as clearly defined as some of the others I’m accustomed to reading, however, it wasn’t a disorderly mess of emotions like I would expect from an inexperienced writer. For me it was more like a daydream, more about the feeling you get from reading it than about the focus of the piece itself. I got the image of a person walking down a sidewalk looking down at the cracks as they progressed through a park or something. Perhaps the cracks represent the past for you “To spread into what I have become” Perhaps reflecting has stirred feelings of remorse over past decisions that have lead you to become the person you are now. Maybe the line “I smile in knowing there is much more inside me as beauty to be seen” is your way of saying that your past doesn’t need to define who you are now. *smiles* this is as far as my understanding leads me *laughs* an interesting write and worth considering.

Writing poetry is, itself, a voyage of self-discovery. Writing poetry about self-discovery may be considered doubly poetic. Writing poetry about self-discovery that promises future self-discovery, is Neva.

I love your work. In particular in this poem, I love the line: Asking where my heart passed in these years now gone. I have wondered that often in regard to myself. Your work is poignant and well-crafted. Brava!
