Mainly What They See

Mainly What They See

Unrequited, the love I had given which he could not return.
'Ugly' in his eyes, beauty was not a badge I had earned.
His eyes gazed down upon me with such unshielded contempt.
As if being 'ugly' was a sin from which I should repent.
If he had acquiesced, the love would have been misplaced.
He adored another girl, my friend, with the 'charming' face.
I didn't cry over him, not spilling one tear upon my pillow.
I continued, hoping one day, to witness my beauty billow.
Still, I wonder, the experience, it taught me a lesson.
The true face of men or the world, upon my heart is leaden.
What can a young girl do to be beautiful in the eyes of a man?
Alter her very core and soul or constantly scheme and plan?
Pay the ultimate price for the shoddy opinion of someone else?
Make him realize his mistake and then accept the lies he tells?
I guess physical beauty is a factor essential to be noticed.
Your appearance and your fashion allows them to spill devotion.
Yet, I'm not physically attractive, so what else can I be?
Why can't he look past my appearance and see my inner beauty?
