The Squirrels

The Squirrels

A Poem by Chad Hollingsworth
"

Just reflections on my morning.

"
Today I watched squirrels
Preparing for winter
Through the trees of their world
They danced with true splendor.

Assembly lines all,
Ten it seemed running,
The acorns would fall,
Their methods were stunning.

Some worked all alone,
And others by twos,
Burying by the stones,
All knew what to do.

The pleasure I found,
In watching them go,
Realizing these sounds,
Meant preparing for snow.

Knowing that soon,
The sun might not shine
And that the cold moon,
Was not too far behind.

The work was intent
With unity amongst all,
As if some message were sent,
Old Man Winter had called.

And from the created
Another lesson I’ve learned
To see what is slated,
When seasons do turn.

To be useful this day,
Make most of each morn,
This moment I say,
Is enjoyed most when not torn.

For with unity they work,
Each squirrel has a purpose,
Not running berserk
Like we clowns in our circus.

For squirrels, they’ve taught me,
To work with all that is found,
Whether by shaking the tree,
Or gathering on ground.

Wow, I almost passed this up, thinking it'd be something stupid and poorly written. Don't feel bad, first impressions are almost always wrong. And wow was I ever wrong!
I loved reading this! Every stanza I started to read and every one I finished, they brought a smile to my face, just admiring your talent! The poem flows freely and perfectly, much like the work-lines of the squirrels.
This is beautiful as just a simple observation of a moment in life, but the depth to which you delve is amazing! To compare their methodical and simple workings to our (sometimes futile) "rat race" for monetary success (and others like that) is brilliant! I could kick myself for not thinking of that first!
Thank you, so much, for this addition to the site! Reading this made my day better =]
