About Sofia

A Story by Cesare Barbieri

The man came out from the bathroom, closing the door.

“You know, I was thinking about all that stuff in supermarkets. Well, I mean, if you think about it, supermarkets are full of stuff, aren’t they? Somone could… I don’t know, someone just could get inside one of them and buy anything. I mean, do you need some flour? You just get there and buy one or two bags of it. When you are queueing up at the till what do you see? A hair drier. You know that what you needed was just flour, just three or four bags of it. Despite that, you look at the hair drier. First of all you absent-mindedly look at it, than you start to ask yourself who the hell had put it on a shelf just close to the tills. You look at the others and you realize that there are not only hair driers close to them but sunglasses, face creams or sweets. All of a sudden, whitout reasons, you have a strong impulse to buy a hair drier. So, I was thinking, why? Why do they want to force someone to buy a hair drier? Yes, of couse, it’s your job. But… I mean, why? All right, they buy and you earn, but, you know, wich is the reason? Why a hair drier? I don’t know… deal me something else, not a hair drier. I could buy something else, not a hair drier. You know, I just buy three bags of flour, it doesn’t make sense if I buy a hair drier.”
“ Because you could need it.” said the woman laying out mugs.

“What?”
“You asked me wich is the reason to put on a shelf a hair drier or sweets or… what?”
“I don’t know… shampoo?”
“No, you said something different. What have you said? Yes, face cream. All these things could be useful. Imagine that you are in a supermarket with a child. You buy what you need and than when you are queuing up, he sees sweets and so he wants them.Or you could need face creams or a new hair drier. Of course, that things are not basic, but it works.”
The man kept quiet looking at woman’s hands carefully laying out mugs. He set down and he had a drink.

“So why don’t put jam or smoked cheese?”
“Because it’s not sweetable for everyone. They can’t risk to deal nothing. For example, would you buy marmalade?”
“No, I don’t. You know that I dont’ like it. I can’t even eat an orange.”
“Exactly. You look at it but you wouldn’t buy it. But maybe you would buy sweets.”
The man stood up and putted the glass in the sink.

“Why was you thinking about it?”
“What?”
“I said, why was you thinking about supermarkets and"
“Oh, nothing. Nothing. There was a flyer suprmarket so, you know… I was just reading it.”
The woman smiled and nodded.

“By the way, who lef it there?”
“What?”
“The flyer supermarket”
“Where?”
“Just close to the bath tub. Did you go to the supermarket?”
“No, I didn’t go out today”
“So, who was?”
“I don’t know. Maybe Sofia.”
“Sofia?”
“Yes.”
“Did she go out?”
“I don’t know. Maybe this morning. Why?”
“Well, I don’t know… just to know.”
The woman took the glass from the sink , just used by the man, and drank.

“Did she took the car?”
“Sofia?”
“Yes.”
“She took the car this morning. Why?”
“Nothing, just… Well, I just hope she payed attention. I mean, you could never know what can happen. We both know how Sofia is. She is always in a hurry. Like today, you know… how much time do you think she spent with us during the lunch?”
“I don’t know, like us.”
“No. No. She stood up before us and she run to her room.”
“So?”
“None. I just want to know why she has to be always in a hurry.Where is she now?”
“She’s out”
“Really? Again?”
“Yep.”
“Did she take the car?”
“Yes, she did.”
The man grabbed the glass and he started to play whit it, making circles on the table.

“Are you fine?”
“Yes, sure. Why?”
“Nothing.”
“It’s ok, I… I just want her to be more quiet. Just… you know, just quiet. I mean, nobody chase her. If she would be more quiet we… we don’t have to worry about her. Right?”
“I’m sure that Sofia is all right, she knows what she’s doing. She’s fine, there is nothing to worry about.”
“Yes, but maybe I should tell her.”
“Tell her what?”
“To pay attention. There is so many dangers around and I… I love her too much. You know, maybe we have to tell her something.”
“No, come on. Now just relax. Sofia is responsable and mature. Don’t worry about her. Did you take your"
“Yes, yes I did.”
“Fine.”
The man clearned his throath. The woman stood up to clean the glass.

“Are you sure we shouldn’t call her?”
“What? I can’t hear you.”
The woman turn off the water and the noise stopped.
“Nothing, I was just thinking that probably we should call her.”
“I don’t know where she is.”
“Do you know where she could be now?”
“I don’t know. I suppose she’s at the cinema, with a friend.”
“At the cinema?”
“Yep. Why?”
“Nothing. Do you… I don’t know. Do you think she’s driving?”
“I guess so. Otherwives she wouldn’t take the car. Don’t you think?”
“Right, right. I think so. Listen, don’t you think we really should call her? Just, you know, just to be sure that she’s fine. I mean, near the cinema the streets are so dangerous and I wouldn’t that… you know, I wouldn’t that she… I don’t know, I think we just call her. Just call her.”

The phone rang.
The woman still have wet hands, the man was gripping his fingers. They look each other in the eyes.
No one had the slightest intention to pick up.
