NoticeA Poem by John PollockClose your eyes. Think of your surroundings, The hallways filled with your peers, The walls covered with pictures drawn in Art class, The looks everyone’s given you. Feel their stares burn into you and embrace it. Open your eyes. They’re still staring, but now you’re staring too, And you start to notice the little things. Little things that aren’t so little after all. The candy-lipped, wide eyed prom queen Giving you dirty looks is starving herself, Because she wants to look good for bikini season. The toned, tan muscle jock Who just shoved you in a locker? He can’t stop pumping iron Because he remembers when his shoulders Ached from being shoved into the wall. All those white-teethed teens Who look down at you All look down at themselves And don’t want to admit it. They feel the pain you’re in, But they won’t embrace it. Now look in the mirror. Look at the lines on your face, The acne scars on your neck. Look at all the things that they notice. And smile. Because they have them too. © 2014 John Pollock |
