If Only

If Only

Originally written 10.5.2012 If only I was Peter Pan.

"

You whisked me away

on gossamer wings

to Never Never Land,

and we played in the clouds with the sky mermaids,

laughing and jumping and tumbling through the soft billows

without a care in the world.

But oh,

oh I did not know

your heart belonged to another.

Pinkies out and hearts crossed,

we promised certain things to each other,

promises we would each break without thought.

What I did not know,

oh,

what I did not know

is that the one your heart also belonged to slowly slipped away and you slowly became all mine.

But as we danced with the sky mermaids, not caring that they were sirens in disguise,

my heart began to be pulled by another,

another that whispered seductively in my hear,

telling me that I was not and never would be Peter Pan

and would have to grow up some day.

Reluctantly, I let go of your hand, and we both began to fall through the clouds,

gossamer wings full of bullet holes,

with the gun in my grip so tight my hand was numb.

You were filled with the clouds, and I knew I never could be, as you were of sky and I was of earth.

Soon, the sirens pulled you up, up, and away from me,

and I fell down to earth.
