College Librarian
A Stage Play by Courtney Broderick
Short comedic monologue for male. In this monologue you are portraying a somewhat insecure college student who works at the front desk who is suddenly embarrassed to see his crush in front of him.
I closed my eyes to hind from the smugness of reality and I could hear it all again... (singing) "All I am, is a man. I want the world in my hands. I hate the beach, but I stand in California with my toes in the sand. Use the sleeves of my sweater lets have an adventure! Head in the clouds, but my gravity is centered. Touch my neck and I'll touch yours. You and those high waisted shorts, oh!" I opened my eyes and saw three girls in front of me and became instantly embarrassed. They sort of made a triangle in ranking order. In the top left was the tallest of the girls who, with dark, long hair, was peering at me from behind her square spectacles, most likely questioning how someone like me ever got this job. To the right of her was her smaller counter part, only a bit rounder, who was wearing a blue plaid shirt and a smirk that seemed to laugh at all of my faults. (starts to swoon) And in the middle of them was an average girl with average hair, average facial features, and an average body. Honestly, and truthfully, just an average girl. Probably the most average girl I've seen in my life! After a moment of staring, I pulled out my head phones and said in my casual voice, trying to recover from my awkwardness, "(Voice cracks) Hello, how can I help you?" The average girl in the middle answered, "Can I use the study room?" I opened my hand slowly and she slid her I.D. quickly into it and they left for the study rooms. When they were no longer in view, I put my earphones back in and tried to turn off the noises of the library.
