The Road to Rio

The Road to Rio

A Poem by Cassie Black
"

Summary of the 2014 World Cup

"
Preparations begin four years in advance,
Countries worldwide hoping they'll have a chance
To win the most watched tournament worldwide
That would bring their country honour and pride.
Soon the qualification matches come around
And for some teams, the goal is not easily found.
They once again get left behind
The road to Rio they will never find.
The qualifying teams are now eager and keen
Each one thinking, this year could be my team!
In blazing Brazil, the whistle blows
And the talent of the players clearly shows.
Group stages this year gave us quite a shock
With the previous champions getting the knock
England not advancing proved popular to most
How Suarez, when back in Liverpool, will boast.
Kickoff again and stage two began
Pouring sweat, up and down the pitches they ran.
One tiny push and these huge men fell down
The rest of the world knew they were acting the clown.
The tears and heartache when they didn't get through
The winning teams, to the quarters they flew.
Here is where the great football was played
And for some young players their dreams were made.
Everywhere you looked around
News of the World Cup was always to be found.
These are the world's top teams
And, of course, Twitter created so many memes!
Now to the semi's, were things got tough
Loosing again, the Dutch found rough.
Germany leaving Brazil so far behind
Their own road to Rio, they can never find.
Here we are, once again, the final two
Are Argentina going to be able to pull through?
Which team will be able to say
The Road to Rio, we made it all this way.
