A Scream Or A Whistle

A Scream Or A Whistle

A Poem by CatT
"

My attempt to work through my anxiety of this event.

"

Suddenly we're alert.
"Was that a scream?"
"I think it was a whistle."
Loud thumping and banging
Against the floor and walls.
Then it comes again, the sound.
Yes, definitely a scream.
Nervously, we look at one another.
"Should we call the police?"
Wordlessly, the next crash
Answers "Yes!"

Dialing 911 with shaky fingers.
A stern sounding man answers
And asks for the emergency.
Stuttering, I'm trying to think
Overtop of the commotion above.
"What's the address?"
Spilling it out in a rush,
I'm willing the police
To get here faster.

Sounding slightly annoyed,
"Officers are already on scene."
Such lovely words, simple.
There would be no more screaming
This night.
The noises quieted to the sounds
Of shoe steps on our ceiling.
