Emergence 1

Emergence 1

A Chapter by Cat Mann

It all happened one dreadful, horrid day in the middle of the third moon. The night was dark, and the day was cold. Everyone who was anyone knew that something was coming, they just didn't know what, or how awful it would be. Majutsushi Kurai was a powerful witch that practiced her magic in evil forms. It is said that her mind became that of a black hole after she turned six and is a refuge for the most gruesome and taunting thoughts. She was cast into a long, dark slumber many decades ago by the Gods themselves. They were forced to exile the powerful witch into the darkest place in the world of Maho, a place that was destroyed on that revengeful day...

The ground shook violently as an earthquake hit nearby in the surrounding mountains. The temple containing Kurai was located atop one of the many jagged rocks that enclosed the sea almost completely. It is said that the stagnant formation is the direct result of her exile, for that was the only way that the Gods were able to stop her from taking control over the world of Maho. A temple, therefore, was placed atop of this to ensure that she would not escape.
The earth crumbled away, and so did the temple. The surrounding arena was henceforth enveloped in a thick and unbearable dust cloud. After the quake stopped, and the cloud cleared, everything seemed to be all well. Then a form appeared amongst the rubble. The form was, to the eye, non-identifiable, and enveloped in a dark aurora. The woman's voice rang out loud and clear, even through it's raspy-ness, and half cackle. "They could not hold me for long. Alas, I am free, and I shall have my revenge!" She flew up into the air and spread her arms wide, revealing her much too slender body type. Her head flew back, revealing only her glowing eyes on her face, and she started chanting some sort of spell or curse.

-Three Centuries Later-

The wake-up bell resounded it's dreaded call thought the entire school, almost waking the dead, much less the students. Moaning could be heard in a certain ward in the Boreas Ménage. It's three inhabitants apparently had been enjoying their sleep, until aroused by the bane of their existence: the bell.
"Can't I get just another hour or so of sleep?" moaned the dark-haired girl in the first bed as she pressed her pillow over her ears in hope of more sleep. Meanwhile, the other darker-haired girl in the room pulled the covers over her head in hopes of the same.
"We might as well get up. Otherwise, Eras will come and, well, you know: be her usual self," said the redheaded girl in the center bed. She slowly sat up, and glanced on either side of her, looking at her two best, and only friends. "C'mon!" she beckoned again, but his time, getting out of bed and pulling the pillow away from one of her friends. "I don't want to have to put up with Eras this early in the morning, so, get up, Rhiannon!"
"Hey! Give that back, Cassie. I want my sleep," Rhiannon retorted, snatching back her pillow.
"A little help here, Hanako?" Cassie beaconed to her other friend, who reluctantly got out of her bed, and stood next to her redheaded friend.
"Rhiannon, get out of bed. NOW!" she hollered, shaking the bed frame with her voice, and quite possibly, also her powers.
Rhiannon looked at them, and raised her eyebrows. She then shook her head in defeat, and dragged herself out of bed. "Damn bell. Why can't we have afternoon classes only?" she complained as she pulled on her clothes. She wore a knee-length black skirt that was lined with light blue, along with an interesting black tank top that had blue, iridescent, billowed sleeves. Her hair was about shoulder-length, and was black with blue highlights. She combed it so that it stuck out at the ends. She glanced at the time on the Grandfather Clock that was in their ward. It said 6:20am. Cassarah, otherwise known as Cassie by Rhiannon and Hanako, noticed her looking at it as she too was pulling on her clothes.
"Don't look at it. It'll make you even more tired, Rhia," she advised. Cassarah was the shortest in the three sum, but only by about an inch. She had dark red hair that weaved it's way down longer than her waist when it was not pulled up into it's usual high pony-tail. Her most prominent feature was her bright green eyes, which were constantly surveying her surroundings. She finished pulling on a semi-clear black shawl over her red spaghetti-strap shirt, and slipped into her red, multi- buckle-strap shoes. She looked over at the third girl in the room, noticing that she was moving slightly slower today than usual. "Hanako? Are you going to be ready soon?" she asked. Hanako turned to look at her friend.
"Give me a break. It's only 6:30 in the morning. As long as Eras doesn't come in and bother us, we're fine," she said, combing out her hip-length black hair. She wore more of a leotardal outfit, which really consisted of a short, dark green flared skirt and a skin-tight black tank with netting in the back.  Her lace-up leather boots came up to her knees, and she had not yet applied her long, black cloak.

After finishing the task of getting ready for the first day of term, the threesome made their way down to the Shibo Court, where many other students could be seen coming down for breakfast. The Court was the room where the students ate their meals. It was the largest space in the entire castle, and had long, rectangle tables that were placed in a square pattern, outlining the room. Hanako, Rhiannon, and Cassarah took spots at one of the corners. When they were about half way through their breakfast, the Headmistress, Elle, made her usual speech in honor of the start of yet another new term. She was a scraggily old woman, who looked like she might fall apart at any moment. The students often called her an old hag behind her back. Her attire was not in aid of proving them wrong, though. Her clothes looked like they had been out of date even thirty years ago, thus giving her the look of about ninety, wrinkles and all. Many of the students groaned at her summons for their attention, but looked up anyways.
"May I have your attention. I have an important note to address. As you know, vacations are coming up in about a week. As a direct result of the resurrection of Majutsushi Kurai, all students must leave campus, for we will be making improvements," Elle said, waving her frail arms around to help get her point across, even though it did the exact opposite. Most of the students were too busy watching the patterns that they made to comprehend what she said.
Hanako leaned over to talk to Rhiannon and Cassarah. "Did you get any of that?" she asked.
"Well, I got that we have to leave sometime," Cassarah explained to the best of her ability.
"Something about the vacation, I think," Rhiannon added. "But I don't like the sound of it."
"For this coming vacation, we have to leave so that they can make improvements. No questions asked. Is that good enough for you freaks?" said the all too familiar voice of their fellow classmate, Eras. She stood behind Hanako, and was looking very proud of herself. Her three best friends, and followers stood behind and to the sides of her, each with a smirk on their faces.
"What do you want, Eras?" Rhiannon asked, glaring at her.
"Oh, nothing. I was just passing by and heard your conversation. I thought that I'd help you out a little by clearing up what you were obviously confused by. Not that it's hard to confuse you people," she replied.
"It's too early in the morning, Eras. Go away," Hanako moaned.
"You can't get rid of me that easily, Highbred," Eras bedeviled. Hanako's mother and father were both of magical heritage, and some look down on people who are gifted with two different powers, the way she was. Eras had a habit of calling her a Highbred, which is an offensive term.
Hanako stood up violently, glaring at Eras for making such a rude and low comment. "Don't even start, Eras!" she said through clenched teeth, trying hard not to throw Eras across the room with her powers. She was blessed with control over the elements of water and air, and thus, could move things around, among other talents. Rhiannon and Cassarah were only gifted in single elements, water and fire, respectively. Eras, on the other hand, could manipulate the feeling of love to a certain degree. Eras loved to torture them with her power when they were little, but in their first year of upper-level-schooling, they were taught to block out powers of persons weaker than themselves. That was the end of Eras' torture, but she continued to try to get on their nerves.
"Seriously, how can you two stand to hang out with this Highbred?" Eras asked Rhiannon and Cassarah.
"What do you care? You don't hang out with us. You don't even want to hang out with us, so buzz off," Rhiannon snapped.
"Shouldn't you be heading to class, Eras," Cassarah warned, noticing Hanako's anger.
"But, what if I don't want to leave?" Eras persisted, pouting.
"No, you're leaving. Do you want me to help you out?" Hanako forewarned.
Cassarah and Rhiannon walked around the table to stand by their friend. "She's not worth it, Hanako," Cassarah said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"I'm sure that I can manage without the help of some Highbred," she said, turning to walk out of the Court. Hanako turned back the table.
"Let's go," she said, picking up her things. The threesome walked out of the Court and started towards their first class of the day. They all had The Art of Defense with Mrs. Hukurlie, and dreaded it.
