If you go away on a Summer day...A Poem by Coyote PoetryDo we remember love? Does love remember us?If you go away on a Summer day... Dear Julie told me on a warm August day. I am here waiting in Michigan for you. A Michigan gal is waiting for you. You love your wars, you love to travel and do you love me? If you go away, will you remember me? I told her as we danced by the river, you are my first memory and you are my last thought. I love you so. Her coffee eyes dug into my eyes and she asked me. If you love me, please don't die. War can steal the best from us. I told her. The good die young. I will live forever. She kissed me once and she kissed me a hundred times. She whispered. You are sweet and kind Johnnie. You made me feel beautiful, you made me feel so happy. Please return to me. I loved the wars more than love and I wrote to dear Julie. I will be home soon and I am different. I have seen terrible thing and I have done terrible things. Can you still love me? Julie wrote back. Dear Johnnie. I am waiting for you. I will make you okay. I am a nurse at V.A. Hospital now in Chicago. I know what soldiers must do. Please come to me. I want us to remember we held love so close once and I remember us. Please come home to me. I found Julie on a Summer day. She held me like a child. She whispered. No more war dear Johnnie. I love you so. Coyote
