“Because to influence a person is to give him one’s own soul. He does not think his natural thoughts or burn with his natural passions. His virtues are not real to him. His sins, if there are such things as sins, are borrowed. He becomes an echo of someone else’s music, an actor of a part that has not been written for him. The aim of life is self. Dorian Gray”
“The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.” ― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
“Never marry at all, Dorian. Men marry because they are tired, women, because they are curious: both are disappointed.” ― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
1- She undressed slowly for him, and she told him. I am not seeking love dear poet. I adore sin and the sin had made me know. Old lovers became compliance, and I don’t like compliance. I need someone to twist me up. Make my body want more. I like mystery, I like to feel. Alive. Dear poet. Wicked, we must be. Wicked, we must know. Please make me believe. I am still learning.
2- Folly, we must do,
tomfoolery we must seek.
We must seek the ancient cities,
find places where lovers painted the city red with sin.
Sin is only sin till it is repeated. Then
the sin, we love, we adore, and we want.
3- She looked frail,
she looked innocence.
Coyote
I knew her real face and she sang the sweetest words in the midnight hours.
I knew she was a lioness,
I knew every secret valley and hidden cliff on her perfect body.
She loved the window open wide,
the windy night caressing her nude skin.
She would dance on the patio and
no-one would complain.
She told me, I feel wicked and please get naked for me and make the moon smile.
I like the stream-of-consciousness feel of this piece. It seems like a spontaneous outflow of thoughts, but the theme emerges like a cliff rising out of the restless waters of an agitated sea. I hold similar views on the nature of "sin" as are expressed here. Ever since Jung introduced us to the nature of the shadow personality, we cannot spit on sin any more just like we used to before. What we call "sin" is a part of our psychic makeup, and we must get to know it, experience it, and integrate it into our self.
This piece is quite unique and it made me think of lots of things I usually don't have time to ponder in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As I recall, Dorian Gray stayed young in appearance while his sins warped his picture until it looked like something out of a freak show. One wonders if this is to be the fate of the free loving lady of the poem's second part. Hate to think of it. Any woman who dances naked on her patio can't be all bad.

I agree John. A happy woman is gold and thank you for reading and the comment.
Such wonderful quotes that ring as true today as then. There is no sin, except that that hurts others and even then there must be bad for there to be good. A very liberating view to free us from the chains of control now rusted by the ages. Thank you for sharing.

Now this is astonishing- sin is only sin until it is repeated. What a line. It is very true that if you go a second time on a roller coater, the adrenaline rush is not as strong. You have to wait. I wonder if sin works that way, too? If you commit a sin (which I actually do not even believe in, not being Christian, but theosophically speaking,...) and then abstain, will it again be sinful?
Oscar Wilde was brilliant. Wicked and brilliant.

Thank you for sharing these words.
They are earth and soul shattering (in a good and great way) beyond belief.
I am seeing sin with new eyes and realizing that all my life, I have been only too human.
How desperately we need to rid ourselves of our tonnage of shame!
Great poetry leaves in its wake such revolutions, within and without!
