Sweet Peggy, please don’t cry…

I found you again in 1992. My war had ended for awhile and you were fighting a lifetime war. You had gin, vodka and whiskey on your kitchen table when  I found you again in Florida. I asked you. Sweet Peggy, where are you going? where have you been? What do you want? Are you okay?

You filled two glasses, two ice cubes each and you filled the glass with the whiskey. You drank the whiskey and you told me. Johnnie, Johnnie. I am here no-more. I called you in Michigan and you came to me. You are my only friend.   I have gave everything away and now I am alone. I don’t recognize my face no-more. I am ugly with hate and regret.

Tears fell from her eyes and I brought her close and I whispered. Sweet Peggy, please don’t cry. I am here now and you are not alone. She smiled, took my hands. We danced to the song of the December Florida rain. She took me to her bedroom, opened the large window. She whispered, let’s make love in the rain. Let’s pretend we are babies again. I remembered you love me once Johnnie. Johnnie, Johnnie, please tell me you love me still.

She took off her clothing and she turned to me. She asked. Am I pretty, am I special? I went to her, forcing her pretty body close and I whispered. Whiskey don’t fix us, gin don’t heal the wounds and vodka make us accept less. We will bleed, cry and die often. If you need me. We can try. We are like leftover wine. Waiting to be drank, we are waiting to be loved.

She smiled and she whispered. Promises made are to be broken. We have 12 days and if we have anything left to say before you escape for Texas. We can make more promises to break. She turned around and I kissed her neck and her face. I whispered. Pretty Peggy, I loved you for a thousand years.

Peggy is pretty pathetic and you my dear poet were so kind and loving to her, even if it didn't last. You words are so comforting and kind that i think any woman would love you forever. Th poem is smothered with love words and put in such a special place. Well done.
Best, B.

Sometimes we meet the right people at the wrong time or the wrong people at the right time.

Love is so many different things and comes in many different times in varying degrees. Sometimes we just need someone to comfort us in physical ways. I am an open minded person and understand that it isn’t always forever but a short term adventure.

I love the kindness and comforting in this poem. The realness of being a human with its troubles and trials.

nothing good can
be found in the bottom
of a bottle. Peggy was
lucky to have a friend
like you lift her spirits

Poor Peggy, found some solace in drink when she hit rock bottom. Nothing good comes out of a love for the bottle. So lonely, but Coyote was her friend. He helped to mend her broken spirit. A lovely story of true friendship. The First Cut is the Deepest is a truly beautiful and memorable song. Wonderful lyrics. Thank you dear friend for sharing your work.

Thank you dear Pat. Thank you for reading and the kind words.
Drink always brings back the good times, unfortunately you have to keep on drinking to keep the spark alive. Life is so cruel and age is the crutch that doesn't help things along.

Yes, drink will not fix us....we have to do that for ourselves.

So beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. In our older days we see ourselves simply as ghosts of our former youth. The mirrors don't lie nor choose to obfuscate reality. It is our yearnings that choose words to lighten the pained truth. To know love again when we were young. Thank you for this mirror into all of our souls, CP. We are wiser for it.
