215 Indigenous children- my prayer

215 Indigenous children- my prayer

A Poem by Coyote Poetry
"

I hold great sadness today.

"

A prayer….. 215 Indigenous children....

215 Indigenous children are in my prayers. I am angry. Once burning energy of life stole from my world. I will burn sage for them and their parent. My dear Ojibwa grandmother was took from her family at five year old. The government schools cut her hair, changed her name and she wasn’t allowed to speak her language. She never saw her family again. I am upset that we live in a world that can harm a child.

My heart is heavy with sadness. I have five beautiful grandchildren and I would give my life to save them. I pray the children found a better place where they could run free and not be caged-up. Today I will burn sage alone and I will pray for them. I do not understand why this happen. Many will learn sorrow and the great lies given. Will become a great sorrow for mothers, fathers, grandparent and family. Knowing their children were left in a unmark grave.

I pray the 215 children can be bury on their Native lands. I pray the broken heart of many can survive this actions done. I will ask the sky, the trees and the river. Please send my prayers to them. Tell them, they are not forgotten.

How pitiful and disturbing this story is, but told so poignantly...No one should be forced from their land or separated from their children, as we do in our country... no child should ever be harmed, no matter the ethnicity....perhaps there is hope that these people can buried on their native land in a proper burial service. Sad story John, but very well written.

History has shown that since the very earliest of time, one of man's greatest attributes is the ability to slaughter each other.
We are an extremely imperfect creature, that given our current direction, may not exist too much longer.
How right you are to mourn, what are no less than criminal deaths, of young children forcibly taken from their families for 'cleansing' by what was at the time, an extremely racist government, run by an even more racist prime minister.
It appears the current govt. both on its own and increasingly spurred on by national and international pressure, is moving in the right direction and I expect they will do what needs doing, if in fact, healing is possible.
The Roman Catholic church, which was given a free hand in this scenario, has not officially apologized (some bishops have done so) for their cruel, physical and sexual abuse of many of these poor souls.
The rate of death among the children was five times higher than the school population as a whole, with TB, meningitis and other diseases piled on top of confusion, sadness and abuse.
I understand the burials were done in unmarked graves to 'save money!"
A very sad chapter.
I grew up between two reservations and we all hung out together. Basically, our lives were the same and although we have drifted apart as adults, life is now much the same for all, Truth is, I think the reserves now do as much to create a barrier as not.
I doubt anything done by anybody will be considered sufficient, but hope is, this type of thing will never be repeated

dearest John... I do not understand why history can repeat what has been done... perhaps the force of evil is always fighting with the force of good. Your poetry is sad about your Grandmother... your Prayers are Sacred. We will always pray our grandchildren will never suffer this way, and we will pray also for all the children left abandoned in our Country who are left here ... we will pray for these young Souls. tenderly, Pat

I too do not want to be associated with a world that would do this. I do however want to be associated with your rightous and poetic anger. This speaks more damning of the society it affected than of the innocence they cruelly altered.

Thank you ken for reading and the comment. Mr. D. Said forget. We can't forget, I can't forget.
Let's hope your burning sage and prayers are heard. Still now, genocide and forced assimilation is happening in parts of the world and we, as humans, don't seem to be learning from the lessons of history. Your sadness at what has occurred is well defined in your words here, and they bring to light the sad plight of these lost souls. 💛

Thank you dear Marina. We must stand for the people who cannot.
The world is a sad, pathetic, lonely, disgusting place to live. You shouldn't be surprised that things like this happen. I could tell you what they do to pigs and other animals in certain countries, but I won't. My point is, bad and terrible things happen in this shithole of a world we live in. We can let it destroy us on the inside, or we can buck the f**k up and move on about it. Me? I choose to do the latter. Whichever you choose will be up to you. But if the people think the world will eventually get better, it won't. It will get much worse until its eventual destruction. Salvation of your souls is vital.

The world will be destroyed soon, folks. Are you right with God? You better be. D, out.

I heard about this tragedy on the news. It truly beggars belief that there is such vileness that would take children from their loved ones and destroy them in this cruel way. How terrified and fearful they must have been. I am so sorry Coyote to learn about your grandmother and her story. I will light a candle this evening for them all. They must never be forgotten.

When people remove indigenous folk, children especially, from their natural surroundings, it;s not done out of kindness nine times out of ten... it is done because of FEAR of the instinctive knowledge those stolen children have deep inside them and also, the fact that they want life to remain natural and as the Lord or Nature decreed NOT dug up for a myriad of reasons, - mainly commercial. I felt the power of your words in this writing, John. Thank you for sharing with ignorant of facts, me. Keep safe, sir.

There is a deep and unfathomable sadness in these words. It speaks of the cruelty of a people who conquer, force assimilation, erase cultures, and who themselves were foreign in a land that was not theirs. Whose mantra of colonialism was defined by words Manifest Destiny. Even to this day the remnants of their ideology still remains in a small group who refuse to accept the dark truths of their historic past. Because it is a stain upon them. I am of mix blood. I carry the spirit of the indigenous people of Central America and the spanish conquerors who defeated and took of them their history. And yet through oral and written stories in native tongue that they shared amongst each other they were able to retain a semblance of their culture and some of their identity. Tales like this wonderful poem are countless to the people who have survived. And they did so in order for us to never forget. Thank you, John, for sharing your poem.
