I remember tracing your body with my fingers, I remember you whispering to me.
Johnnie, Johnnie. Are we just whispering in the wind, just secret kisses shared in the midnight hours.
You loved the two hour massage and the song of Leonard Cohen. You were my Winter California storm and I was the quiet lake. I kissed your knees and I told you.. We are just furious souls seeking something beautiful in our messy world.
You loved San Francisco. We would drive highway one from Monterey to the city that never fall asleep. We stopped at every ocean exit and we danced. You would ask me. Please Johnnie, Johnnie. Swirl me one more time. Don't stop spinning me. Someday we will need these days.
In San Francisco, after the taverns closed. We danced at the pier for the Pacific, danced for the stars and the moon. I remember you kissed me a hundred times and you asked. Please Johnnie, Johnnie. Swirl me one more time. Let's create a canvas of forever.
Today I live in Michigan and I remember my beautiful North Dakota girl who loved to laugh, be bare-a*s by the sea and she made life wonderful and sweet. Her words, now are true. "Swirl me one more time, don't stop spinning me my love. Someday we shall need these days. "
I do need a day spinning a memory, dancing with my muse of hope. One more time.
Sometimes I wonder how much of your writing is fiction and how much of it was real....but at the same time..I know it really doesn't matter. You create your own beautiful world of beautiful places and beautiful women.. and each come to life in the mind of your reader so vividly that it's like one of our own memories like we watched the events unfold ourselves. They resonate with us on the deepest levels. This is why I love your work. This is no different. Beautiful. Stunning.

What a killer tribute to your lady friend! Wowza! Love the way you use "Johnie Johnie" quite often in your writing . . . don't see anyone else doing this & it conveys a surprising amount of feeling & yearning when you put that in there the way you do. When you tumble thru the various locations in a bit of a haphazard way, this gives us the feeling of the life of a tumbleweed. Very present, palpable writing! Love all the references to dancing! Thank you dear Margie. We need those old memories and places.
Memories are like poems that follow us forever. You do a lovely job of translating the memory or melding the memory with poetry and making it a space of beauty and comfort.
As poets, I suppose we are charged with capturing the spirit of a thing so we, and others, can feel the same sense of things we did. Or so that we can simply create an avenue for understanding.
For me, this poem does those things. It shows what it is like when two hearts connect. Even knowing their connection is destined to be brief. But, in the end, what has passed will follow and follow. And be a beacon in darker times.
Really enjoyed this, Coyote.

Thank you Eilis. Memories, gold of us, who love to write.
Great times to remember and how we need them in the dark days.
Wonder how many times it happens in life, that brief stop that changes everything, maybe the trip home that was canceled forever. It sure happens.
