Beautiful Jenni told me. "Baby, two highways can never be one. You want the world and I want you here. War, battles to be fought and new places to be discovered. They will break your heart one day when you learn. You can't have me and the worldly victories you seek."
I asked my beautiful Jenni. Will you still love me tomorrow? The wandering soldiers will return and need you near. I will dream of your embrace in the faraway places the Army will send me. I will yearn for your voice and to be able to look into your eyes and kiss your sweet lips.
Jenni looked away and she whispered. "I have loved you Johnnie and I know you love me, but I know. You loved the road more than me. You loved the journey and to discover the unknown valleys or ridges. I will love you in the morning light and when you depart. You will break my heart for the last time."
Old Poet held his love tightly. He knew her words were true. He knew Jenni told him the truth. His last chance to keep her forever or will he escape?
The morning light came and Soldier left a beauty waiting. The soldier felt tears falling as he headed down highway I-94 toward Chicago. Jennie stood alone. She knew he loved her but he was a wandering. She knew they shared last embrace and kiss. Sweet Jenni cried alone for she knew. Love could be so sweet and could break your heart. She whispered. Goodbye my Johnnie. I pray you find your place where you can know peace.
I was looking for your poem "Mercy" (which I haven't yet located) . . . stumbled on this excellent snippet of life on the way to war. I love the way you used dialogue so well to show what was going on here, rather than telling the story. In fact, all your pieces have this strength -- you involve the reader, rather than there being a bit of "remove" between writer & reader. It also amazes me, the things you think of to put down in words. So many little snippets of life which stir memories & melancholy in your readers. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Kassie for reading and the comment. I appreciate the comment.
Since everyone on my homescreen has reviewed this writing, I thought I should do that, too. ;)
I like the story, it has (again) this familiar vibe surrounding it, like in your other writings, as well. I think you are a nice and melancholic, thoughtful but positive story teller.

Thank you for reading.I like being a storyteller. My Grandfather was a storyteller.
I saw Jacob's review and I knew I could not miss this write or wait till later.
The words ring true. They must for these are my own words even though Jacob said it first.
Truth ring's with a perfect pitch when you hear it, it vibrates through every cell of your being and makes itself known.
Oh John... So much is said here beyond the words. You were both correct and truth was spoken. but oh how sorrowful is the aching heart of lovers being torn apart.
You both made the choice and probably wise at the time, but these choices still ring of love's separation till the end of time.
Perhaps that is the ringing echo that is so profound... Though both made the choice and with sound minded reason.
It's the heart's, that still echo their lamenting cries.
They have discovered that the Heart has a nervous system and brain even more complex, then the brain.
Perhaps, the thought of the heart has a mind of it's own, is more real then we know.
Perhaps, Your heart will never let your mind forget Sweet Jenni.
But Maybe your mind can console, your heart with reasoning someday and let it stop crying.
This write has touched me more then anyone you ever wrote John. I learned a lot from this one.

Thank you for reading and the comment. Being a soldier for 15 years. Gain and lost many good friends.
A sad write, sometimes one cannot love just yet or have peace until one's journey is complete or forever be restless! An excellent piece of writing John.
A heartfelt and truly meaningful write. Loves road can be a lonely one and the struggles of love can sometimes outweigh where we stand in time. Love in the now is a feeling that is unique and one of a kind for each of us and when we are loved there is nothing more special than those feelings....when the love ends so does our world and tomorrow seems so far away.
