Why do we write story and poetry?

Old wise saying. "Nothing good to say. Say nothing."

Poetry, my dear friends,
is a sacred incarnation of a smile.
Poetry is a sigh that dries the tears.
Poetry is a spirit who dwells in the soul,
who nourishment is the heart,
who wine is affection.
Poetry that comes not in this form is a false messiah.

                   Why do we write poetry and story?

Kahlil Gibran expressed the real reasons for writing above.

Poetry and story is not to offend.

It can teach, motivate and make you cry or laugh.

Be graceful for writer's who shared their words and thoughts.

Never be negative in public.

Send a personal e-mail with a offer of assistance.

Poetry can dance on a page.

Can make us envision beauty or pain.

May take us to a new world of fantasy or a journey into the past. 

There is no perfect Poet or Writer.

We must find a proper edge of understanding with the reader.

Words should be a pleasure to read. Not a challenge.

We need a billion new writer's and Poet's.

People who see and understand our world.

A person who tried to understand history, love and modern times.

People need hope and dreams.

Not sadness and naysayers.

Better to be a kind teacher than looking for weaknesses in our things.

For me poetry is about expressing something inside that needs to come out...and when I read the poetry of others, then it is about trying to connect. We are all so different... Now I try to see the world through the eyes of another. How do we critique that?

[The dark story]

i do agree that poetry and story are like a guiding light...i am still a kid but i can say i have learnt a lot from reading such ravishing pieces of writing and i am still learning. according to me, reading stories and poems and actually widen my idiosyncrasy and have given me the capability to ruminate in a right direction and has inspired me to such a length that i have started writing my thoughts and feelings on paper...and yeah i do agree with you that one should not be negative towards a writer but should assist them!!

Very beautiful sentiments, Coyote. And some exquisite quotes at the beginning too. WC needs this poem now more than ever before. Everywhere I see people afflicted by some of the caustic criticism floating around. I have been told that many new writers have therefore left WC. It deeply saddens me.

I don't think it is wrong to point out shortcomings because it is a part of the learning process. If a teacher never tells you you did something wrong, you'll never improve, or take much longer to improve. The problem lies in the way criticism is expressed. I read a one-lined review on a poem the other day which had the following words:
"Why would you request me to read this?"
And that is all! That is so obnoxious! Something like that could never qualify as constructive criticism because it doesn't give any message. Just throws a wanton insult. It is things like these that we as a community of writers should try to eradicate from the system.
